Being Vegan In A Non-Vegan Home

Being Vegan in a non-Vegan home can be challenging and I'm not going to lie to you. The people/person you live with will most likely not see eye to eye with you, when it comes to your cruelty-free lifestyle. They might even act like they understand and agree with your choice and then later on offer you everything under the sun that doesn't fit with your beliefs... I know the struggle and the pain it can be to just get the people you live with to accept/respect your lifestyle change, even if they don't understand/agree.

I am in your shoes right now, being a Vegan in a non-Vegan household... Here is my story!

I decided to go back to the non meat lifestyle back in October 2015, when one day after cooking/eating dinner... Chicken, rice and broccoli to be exact, I didn't feel the same. Months prior to this I remember always telling myself, I really need to cut out meat again. I think it was really my body giving me signs and thought that I didn't need it. So with this meal in October and eating my chicken I remember telling my boyfriend who was also at the table with me eating, that this chicken didn't taste the same and I'm not liking it and I just can't eat it. He must of thought I was getting sick or just plane out crazy because he thought it was great. This was the time I new my run with eating meat had come to an end... again, because out of all of the animal meats chicken was my favorite and since that day I haven't had any animal meat. Your probably thinking this sounds like a vegetarian lifestyle and not a vegan one. Well that's because dairy is something I already didn't consume (unless I cheated myself). I'm lactose intolerant and dairy makes me feel like shit physically and emotionally and it starts up my eczema. Ever since being really true to myself and not agreeing to accept the consequences of having dairy has my eczema been under control and I haven't broken out. I really think that tells a lot! 

So that's my transformation into veganism again and let's get into my living situation.

As of right now I live with my boyfriend and his dad and it has been like that for 4 years now. When it comes to food, eating and cooking, comes down to either pops or myself that's making meals for the house. Since turning vegan, none of that has changed. I was very upfront from the beginning and told everyone I was now vegan. I of course had to explain what it was, since a lot of people don't know what it is and only really know Vegetarianism. I was okay with that but the one part that really alarmed me was when people asked, "so what do you eat then". Like there was nothing left to eat if you cut out animal meat and dairy. This is a really big awakening, for me and our society because if a person is only seeing meat and dairy as food, those same people are not getting fruits, vegetables, grains and nut in their everyday diets or at the least not enough... Thank about that! 

Shopping: I do a lot of the grocery shopping as it is, so I can buy anything I want to eat. In my area of living they don't really cater to Vegans (I live next to some farmers) Probably one of the reasons I really miss San Francisco. But the plus side to that is I don't consumer so much processed vegan foods. So my tip is by your basics and look up creative simple recipes to make. You can get a huge bag of rice for $9 that will last you months and beans are also very cheap. Remember veganism is suppose to be simple, so don't over complicate it with buying expensive products and over thinking.

Cooking: If you don't know how to cook, now is your time to learn. Because vegan cooking is basic cooking and there is no excuse if you can't boil water. When I cook I make two separate meals, one for my meat eating family and a Vegan version for myself. It can get overwhelming but that's my way of supporting there lifestyle even though I know longer believe it. They give like 30%  when it comes to cooking vegan for me. So I just will eat the rice and vegetables. PS: Meat smells so nasty to me now

Bullying: I don't force or preach veganism to anyone because I wouldn't want the same thing done to me. But it doesn't workout that way! I still get offered meat products and meals even though I said 1,000+ times I'm vegan or even get joked at when I'm having my vegetables based meals. I just brush everything off and remind myself of people's ignorance. But it can really hurt when it's someone your close to and love and their just not fully getting it. But never give up, in this society and culture people really stand behind there meats and thinking your just going through a faze.

Hey fellow Shy Children!

With this New Year started and goals/resolutions already made and put into place, success now mid month might seem know where near. But that doesn't mean giving up on your dreams of having a healthy life is over with. All you have to do is keep trying and really believing that you can make it. 

I highly believe in the law of attraction and to simplify it, basically it's when you tell yourself and believe that you have anything you wanted. So in this situation if you want to loose blank amount of weight, you need to put that into the universe by believing that that you already accomplished your goals. It might sound a bit crazy at first and I know some of you are reading thing right now and may think I have freakin lost my marbles but give it a try and I'm sure you will feel way happier and accomplish more.

So, for the rest of this month starting today... Not tomorrow, not Monday... TODAY! Weigh yourself once, right down the number (because that's all it is a number) cross it out and put what you wish to weigh (not your final goal weight, just the next weight you would like to get too). Don't throw away this paper, keep it someplace safe like in your planner and put your scale up. Now instead of dreading how you gain weight over this holiday season, focus on your wish weight and that is your new weight and your going to try to work yourself down from there. That doesn't mean pulling out that scale and weighing yourself after a week because that's not the point of this exercise. The point is to help you feel motivated and really truly believe in what you can accomplish. I have seen too many times... Even with myself and I will use myself as an example. I would know my weight, go in and exercise everyday... A week would pass and I would way myself again and get highly disappointed because the scale said I gain 5 pounds. Then the rest of the day that would be all that I'm thinking about. Not realizing building muscle really plays a big part in the beginning and measures myself would have been the way to go. 

I know this might have been a lot to remember in all of the explaining, so I'm going to break it down: 

1. Get a paper, pen, your scale and weigh yourself.
2. Write down that number, take a red pen and cross it out.
3. Under that crossed out number wright down what you wish to weigh (remember this is a step process, so your writing down your next realistic goal)
4. That number you wrote down is what you weigh now, focus on that number.
5. Work out hard and eat right/clean with your goal number in your head to beat.
6. DONT WEIGH YOURSELF! .... For the rest of this month (this way you will truly get into the motion of eating right and exercising)

So friends, you can do this because I'm going to be doing the same thing. But if your scared that snacking is going to be your failure (I know it's mine), I have two solutions for you.

One of my most frequently asked topic questions I get, has to do with my hair and what I use in it to keep it healthy.
 I can see why I get these type of questions, since on here I don't really get into hair and hair care at all. It's just a topic I find hard to talk about since we all have different hair and hair types and need to do certain things to upkeep it.
But since a lot of you are interested in my hair, I guess I can get into the topic with you and maybe my tips and tricks can help you out too.
So first thing first, when it comes to my hair and hair care I love to test out products. It's a way for me to see how different types of products work for me and don't work. That's one of the reasons I have know problems reviewing shampoos and conditioners on here ... But those favorites are for another post. After testing out so many products over the years of my life I do have 3 holy grail products that you will always see me using and buying over and over again. The 3 products are a hair and scalp grease, a leave in strengthening conditioner and last but not least a heat protectant spray. So that being said lets get into why I love them!

Hair grease, hair grease... Hair grease! This can be one of the most controversial things in the black community. People say don't use it, so say do use it, others say only use certain ones and last but not  lease your hair dresser says user not using it right... Like WTF! I use this Africa's  Best one and I freakin love it. It has to be the best smelling grease ever! It does have little herbs in it but that docent bug me. I love using this after shampooing and conditioning my hair. I apply the leave in conditioner first and comb that through and then I apply this grease comb and then brush it up.
Tip: To preserve your hair style and the moisture you applied always wear a hair cap or silk scarf when your sleeping. This way the moisture stays in your hair and you also don't have to straighten it as much.

Having a leave in conditioner is very important for a lot of different hair types. But us with ethnic/Afro hair really need it the most. Since the key is to keep your hair happy and moisturized. Think of your hair as a flower, you watered it and watered it and watched it grow. But some days you didn't and you started to see it sag and look unhappy... Well that's like your hair. It's most happy when moisturized and conditioned that's why the hair grease above and this leave in work so great together.
I love this leave in because it super easy to use. All you have to do is shake it up to activate it and spray it on your damp or dry hair and that's it. Also it smells really good and the finish will have your hair looking conditioned and healthy.
Tip: Ever seen a picture or video of me with wavy hair that looked like I curled it at one point? Well I didn't! After straightening, my hair can look way to straight and that's not really my style. So I will spray my hair with this and comb it through letting my natural waves kinds come out.

I straight my hair at the most about three times a week and that depends on the season/weather/state of my hair. To some people that's to much and I'm damaging my hair and to others I'm blessed that I only have to straighten it that much. For me, it is what it is and I have to do it to keep my hair manageable . That is why I choose and always preach if your going to add ANY TYPE of heat to your hair always use a heat protectant... It's your best friend. I love this TRESemme on because it smells good but it's also really light on the hair. You can even use heat up to 450 degrees of you need that much... Some times I do! It also leaves a nice finish and shine to the hair once straightened. 
Tip: Pick a high number like 20 and spray that many sprays to you hair. This way you know your hair got some protection applied to it. Also I like to Apply some even when I don't straighten it on very hot days that I know I'm going to be in the heat/sun.

When it comes to the weekend and going out to shop, simple dressing is my favorite way to go... Wait! That's like everyday but if you ever seen my Snapchats (fashionshychild add me), you will know there are levels to simple dressing for me. I love to be comfortable and have a know fucks given vibe at the same time. But that doesn't mean going out in sweats, I just can't do it. I think the closest I got to that was Yoga pants but they even looked stylish.
Telling you all of this is because this weekend I got to go to Target. OMFG! I haven't been to Target since 2014. That doesn't mean I haven't shopped there; since online shopping has to be on my top 5 favorite things to do. But seeing how they kinda changed their displays  was absolutely beautiful. Also if you know me that dollar section was my first place to hit up... You gotta love it!
